Choosing, configuring and fixing your payroll and HRIS platform

Thinq helps companies choose, configure, implement and run payroll and HRIS platforms, including Rippling, Gusto, ADP, TriNet, Justworks, Deel and Paychex, based on how the company actually works rather than whichever demo looked best. Often the platform isn't the problem at all; the setup is.

The questions that actually decide it

  1. Where do your people work, and where will they?

More states, or people outside the U.S., change the answer.

  2. Who runs payroll day to day?

A founder, an office manager, a bookkeeper. Interfaces differ more than feature lists suggest.

  3. How much should the platform do?

Payroll only, payroll plus benefits administration, or the wider stack including devices and apps.

  4. What does reporting need to do?

If you'll reconcile a 401(k), benchmark benefits or support an audit, the report builder matters more than the dashboard.

  5. What will switching disrupt?

Year-to-date data, benefits deductions and 401(k) connections are where switches go wrong.

What we do

  1. Requirements on one page, in your words

  2. A side-by-side of the platforms that fit

Priced for your headcount, including the add-ons you'd actually use.

  3. A stated recommendation, with reasons

  4. Implementation

Data migration, parallel payroll, benefits plan setup, integrations and employee rollout.

  5. Stabilize it

We stay with it until your team is running the system correctly.

We don't require a company to replace its platform because we're involved. Many engagements keep the platform and fix configuration, reporting, permissions, benefits setup or process.

How Thinq is paidDepending on the service, Thinq may receive carrier commissions, referral fees, partner compensation or direct client fees. None of those relationships require you to use a specific carrier, platform, PEO or payroll provider. We work with the providers you already use when they fit, and we recommend alternatives when something is a better match on cost, service, administration and the needs of your business.

Common questions

Rippling or Gusto for a company our size?

It depends on states, reporting needs, who will own the system and how fast you're growing. As a starting point, Gusto tends to suit simpler single-state setups and Rippling tends to suit multi-state companies that need deeper reporting. The full comparison is on our Rippling vs Gusto page.

Can we switch payroll providers mid-year?

Yes, but year-to-date wages and taxes have to migrate correctly and the year's filings get more complicated. Switching at a quarter start is usually cleaner.

Do you earn anything from the platforms you recommend?

We may have partner, referral or other compensation relationships with some platforms. That never requires you to choose them; the recommendation is based on fit, cost, service and the work involved.

Do you handle implementation or just the recommendation?

Both. A recommendation without implementation is how companies end up using a fraction of what they pay for.

Not sure what you need? Good. That's where we come in.

Most companies come to us knowing something isn't working, not knowing which service to buy. We'll help you figure it out first.
